El Yunque's primary forest is the largest remnant of the original forest that covered virtually the entire island of Puerto Rico 500 years ago. Nearly one-third of El Yunque’s tree species are endemic to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, and 10% are endemic to the Forest itself. Other species were brought in for other reasons: commercial or aesthetic.
