Due to recent landslides the access road has been closed to vehicles. Hiking access is available.
The area offers scenic views of the Rio Blanco watershed and the coastal areas of Naguabo and Humacao along with inspiring views of the mountains and the coast as well as access to rivers and water play opportunities. The gate is closed but it is possible to park by the gate and walk the road up to the recreation area site.
Opened in 2011 in the southern section of the El Yunque National Forest includes 10 picnic shelters along the river, paved parking for 25 vehicles, a durable walkway and restroom facilities. The creation of Rio Sabana Recreation Site was a unique venture that marked the first time that the US Forest Service, the Naquabo Municipality, PRASA and PREPA had partnered to manage a public project.
