El Verde Research Field Station

Status: CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC

Built in 1937 as a leader of tropical research. Managed by the University of Puerto Rico in partnership with LTER, CZO, and IITF.  It began operations as El Verde Rainforest Project in 1963 by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, a predecessor agency of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), sponsored the project and emphasized research on forest ecosystem processes, such as nutrient cycling, energy flow, and response to gamma radiation. It continues now as a Research area for tropical ecology.
